Prevented-Ocean Plastic (POP)
Prevented Ocean Plastic is plastic that has been collected from coastal areas at risk of plastic pollution. As pioneers in sustainability, the addition of POP to our product portfolio is a fundamental step in ensuring we drive positive environmental change.

Available Products
We can source a whole host of PET products in POP, including Straight-sided Jars, Boston, Sirop, Tubular, and Bullet bottles. If you have a requirement or are looking to upgrade your current packaging to a sustainable alternative, get in touch with us today!
The POP scheme aims to collect plastic before it enters the ocean and has an impact on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Plastic that has already entered the ocean is exposed to UV rays and saltwater, causing it to degrade and become brittle, rendering it unusable in terms of recycling. The scheme is therefore a proactive, preventative programme as opposed to a reactive ocean clean-up initiative.
To qualify for the recycling scheme, four key areas must be met:
-
The plastic must be found within 50km (30 miles) of an ocean coastline (or a major waterway that feeds into the ocean).
-
The plastic is collected from a country or region that lacks waste management infrastructure and collection incentives.
-
These countries are being overwhelmed by population growth and tourism.
-
There is a significant risk to wildlife if plastic contaminates their ecosystems.

The POP Process

Discarded bottles are collected from at-risk coastal areas and taken to local collection centres. The scheme also aims to improve the lives of individuals living within these communities, providing income for their collection efforts.

Once received, the bottles are sorted, cleaned, and compacted, ready for transportation to a plastic recycling facility.

At the recycling facility, the compacted plastics are broken down into raw flakes, which are then processed into pellets. These pellets are then sent to manufacturers who will create new packaging products.

The process provides full traceability from beach collection to the final production material (flake or pellet). The resulting packaging can be easily identified on shelves by the distinctive blue triangular logo!
What are the benefits of POP?
Prevents damage to marine ecosystems and reduces carbon emissions.
The materials produced are high-quality and still retain their clarity despite the recycled contents, improving sustainability without sacrificing quality.
Provides complete traceability from collection to the final production material.
All POP packaging can be recycled after use, creating a closed-loop system.
Prevents 1000s of tonnes of plastic from entering oceans each month and benefits the coastal communities in these areas.
Aligns with growing consumer concerns surrounding eco-friendly packaging.
